IITV:

General Information:

HB Community schools are small, rural, K-12 schools with very low enrolments and therefore, very small staffs. As such, it is essentially impossible for them to provide a full slate of programming on a school-by-school basis. The HBNI IITV system allows its member schools to offer affordable, quality high school programming to its students. Utilizing the HBNI IITV video conferencing system, one teacher can reach a virtual classroom consisting of students from any or all of the member school.

Through the years, the HBNI IITV system has grown into a successful model serving over 30 member schools in Manitoba, as well as a couple in Minnesota and South Dakota.

The HBNI IITV system offers all of the core mandatory Grade 9-12 courses as well as a small slate of elective ones. As HBNI is able to supply more teachers, we hope to be able to offer even more courses. Course enrollment is on a first-come-first-served basis with a cap to class size determined at the discretion the course teacher and the HBNI IITV administrator.

HBNI IITV has also been utilized to access post-secondary courses. Courses from regional Community Colleges such as Assiniboine Community College in Brandon, and Red River Community College in Winnipeg, especially pertaining to trades certification, have allowed numerous tradespeople to acheive their journeyman certification in areas such as plumbing, welding, carpentry, and power mechanics without having to make long weekly commutes. Instead, the instructors come to the students via HBNI IITV infrastructure for all the theoretical components of the courses.

HBNI IITV covers its own expenses separate from the HBNI network infrastructure costs by charging a per course fee in line with all distance education providers in Manitoba.
